Before break 2 of my speech groups spent time completing a design challenge. The design challenge required them to make a game to play in speech. Their constraints stated that their game must use at least 2 materials, include their speech words, and be played by 4 players. The students did a fantastic job working together to develop their games. They turned out great!!

Today we got in the spirit of Winter and participated in some snowman activities. Some students worked on describing the different parts of a snowman, identifying the first sounds different winter words, and putting winter activities into sentences to work on specific speech sounds. We also had snowball toss by tossing marshmallows through the holes in our friend Frosty. Keep up the great work Tigers!!
We spent time this past week doing Thanksgiving activities with many groups. We read and answered questions about Thanksgiving, read Thanksgiving poems, and even made Turkeys! The groups that made Turkeys put their reading words on the feathers so that they can practice reading over Thanksgiving break. We loved getting into the holiday spirit!!
All of our students have been working very hard to improve each of their goals.
We used a fun turkey game to reinforce all the kids' hard work on their speech sounds! Hard work earned beautiful feathers to decorate the turkeys' tails! But we were careful not to draw a hunter or his dogs, because then you have to put feathers back!
Keziah is working on her goal of mastering the 'v' and 'f' sounds, and Caleb is working on his goal of perfecting s-blends. Awesome work, guys! Our kindergarten groups have been working VERY hard on their phonemic awareness skills. One of the main skills that we have been focusing on is identifying the first sound in words. Every other week, we monitor each student to see how many first sounds they can identify within words in 1 minute. We keep track of their scores on a graph in our room. Each student gets to mark their score on the graph and make a goal for where they want to be in the next two weeks. When a student reaches "the green section" (winter benchmark) three times, the student "graduates" from reading intervention.
This week we had 3 kindergartners graduate! Aireanna, Olivia, and Addison are all signing our diploma that hangs in the hallway to show the rest of school their hard work! Way to go girls!! We have many other kindergarten students who are getting SO close to getting "in the green" 3 times in a row! Keep up the GREAT work! We celebrated the Fall season with a mini pumpkin game while we worked on recognizing sounds. We have started identifying the last sounds of a word, and each right answer earned a candy! Jaxon, Aireanna, and Addison were VERY hard workers last Tuesday! You can see they were really thinking about those last sounds, and saying the words slowly to themselves to catch the last movements their mouths made to say each one! Great work, guys! Benjamin, Bailey, and Donica have been using books and picture scenes to work on each of their goals. Benjamin has been working on irregular past tense verbs and irregular past tense plurals by telling us what the characters in the pictures are doing. Bailey has been working on asking a question about the pictures, using a grammatically correct sentence. Donica has been working on following directions and answering where/what questions about the pictures. This group works very hard and they push each other to improve on their goals!
We have been using graphic organizers to work on our language goals! Graphic organizers can help us think of clear ideas and communicate them more effectively. They can provide great structure for the way we think as we work on problem-solving, decision making, and summarizing. They also are great tools to use when organizing the content for an essay! Isaiah uses a graphic organizer to organize the details of a short story as he read. After writing down all the details, he summarized a main point that included all the parts of the story. The funnel on the graphic organizer visually represented the process of summing up the details into a main idea! Makayla used a graphic organizer to problem solve a problem between two friends! She wrote down details of a conflict scenario, with the first friend's problem on one side of the paper and the second friend's problem on the other side. Again, a funnel on the graphic organizer visually represents the process of finding a solution that addresses both problems. Using the graphic organizer to solve scenarios like this helps us learn how to solve problems in real life! Check out the graphic organizers below! These links are also available on the homework page!
