Makayla has been working hard this year to expand her knowledge and understanding of a variety of emotions. We are learning to identify and describe more complex emotions such as frustrated, surprised, embarrassed, and scared. These help us describe our own feelings as well as understand the feelings of others. It is important that students learn these emotions so that they are able to accurately describe how they feel rather than using simple emotions such as happy, sad, and mad.
Articulation is a fancy word that just simply means producing speech sounds. A lot of students work with me to learn how to improve their productions of a variety of speech sounds. Articulation therapy takes LOTS and LOTS of practice to retrain the students' mouths to produce their sounds in a different way than what they have been doing for years. We use a lot of picture cards to practice our sounds in the beginning, middle, and end of words as well as in sentences. Check out the action shots of these students in mid sentence practicing their speech sounds :)
I apologize for the long delay between now and my last post. December was full of testing at Herbert Mills and January has been a lot of the same :) This week, things will be starting to look more normal again.
This semester, my reading groups will primarily be with 3rd and 4th graders to help increase their oral reading fluency. My speech students will remain the same and continue working on the goals that we have been doing all year. I have been very impressed with how well my speech students have been doing since winter break. They all were able to pick up right where we left off with very little to no regression of their skills!! Keep checking my blog from here on out to see the fun things we are learning and doing each week! |
