This week, we will start testing STAR Math and STAR Reading. Please make sure that your students are well-rested and ready to show everything they have learned this year!!
Last week kicked off our spring testing at Herbert Mills with all grades doing their spring benchmark for DIBELS. I have to say that I am EXTREMELY impressed with the growth that the students made. They totally rocked their DIBELS! I promised my kids an ice cream party (complete with tons of toppings) if they made their year's growth. Let's just say it looks like I will be buying a lot of ice cream!!

The end of the year is getting closer everyday, and signs of an approaching summer are popping up everywhere at Herbert Mills. I've even heard students (and teachers) starting to count down the days! Some of the most exciting evidence of another school year ending is obvious when considering the work of our wonderful students. Talk about progress! This week, Jadon and Gavin were challenged to write their speech words while they practiced making their good sounds. The work of these two kindergartners was truly impressive! Not only did they get TONS of good practice with their sounds, but they also showed what great writers they are becoming. Miss Weyandt's speech students have so much to be proud of this year! When students come to Miss Weyandt's room to work on their articulation skills it is important that they are able to recognize the difference between correct and incorrect productions. This past month, we have really focused on increasing their awareness in an attempt to have them carry-over their speech skills outside of Miss Weyandt's room! On our table we have 3 pictures. One is a green "thumbs up", the next is a yellow sideways thumb, and the last one is a red "thumbs down." When a student is practicing their speech they evaluate each production on whether or not they think it was "thumbs up", "thumbs down" or somewhere in between. We also have them evaluate their friends' speech! They love when they evaluate the same as Miss Weyandt! "Speech is fun!"
There's a good chance that if you asked a Herbert Mills Tiger what they thought of coming to speech, you might hear that as a response. This might be because we like to find fun and creative ways to work on speech goals all the time! There are many games that we use for targeting different speech and language concepts, and a favorite of Zacki and Logan's is definitely "Guess Who?". This game is an excellent tool for eliciting interactions with peers, and while exchanging questions and answers, there are plenty of opportunities to use good speech sounds! Ask your child what his or her favorite speech game is, and how they practice their speech skills during the game! |
