For the past two weeks, my second grade reading intervention groups have focused on learning long o. We have spent a lot of time talking about the sound pictures that represent oe (o, o-e, oa, ow, oe, and ough). We have read words, word sentences, read stories, and played games all working with long o words. They are doing a fantastic job! Today we read "Goats Go Slow." While reading the short passage, we highlighted all of the sound pictures for o. We then took turns reading the passage and seeing how many words we could fluently read in 30 seconds. The children have brought home their passages and would love to read them to you. Please ask them to share. They have been SUPERSTARS!!!

Meet Miss Morrison! Natalie Morrison is a 2nd year graduate student who is also studying Speech-Language Pathology at The Ohio State University. Natalie will be at Herbert Mills on Thursdays and Fridays. Through my guidance, she will also be working with speech and literacy students. Please make sure to welcome Natalie to Mills if you see her :) Lauren Eskin is a second year graduate student studying speech-language pathology at The Ohio State University. Lauren will be with me at Herbert Mills on Mondays and Wednesdays for the next few months. Through my guidance, Lauren will also be working with your students to help them further develop their reading and speech/language skills. She has jumped right in and is doing lots of fun things with the kids. We are so happy to have her here with us. Please welcome her if you see her around! On Friday, I sent home the following letter with all speech/language students. If you haven't done so already, please return the bottom portion of this letter with your current contact information. This will be extremely helpful for me when we are scheduling IEP meetings. Also, please make sure to provide or refuse permission for using the students' names and/or pictures on this blog. I think it will be super fun for you to see all the things we are doing in speech.
I know it has been awhile since I first posted and I thought I should update everyone on what has been happening at school. Last week the intervention team completed the DIBELS assessment on every student K-4. It was a large task but the assessment gives us valuable data regarding each student's reading skills. After we completed the DIBELS assessment, we looked at all students in 2-4 grade that were unable to read a passage with greater than 92% accuracy. These students were given the Quick Phonics Screener to determine their specific reading strengths and weaknesses. By the end of last week we had a lot of data to look at and determine who needed extra reading intervention. Mrs. Brower and I broke up the K-2 students and Mr. Cracraft will be working with the 3rd and 4th grade students. Parents will be notified this week if their child will be receiving extra reading intervention. This week and next week we are doing the STAR reading and math assessments with all students. This is a computer-based assessment that is being used in every elementary across the district to track student reading progress. Please check and see if a letter has been sent home informing you that your child will receive reading intervention. The letters that will be sent are also uploaded below for each grade level.
