Herbert Mills students come to the Miss Weyandt's room for many reasons. A quick browse through this blog will show you that lots of hard work is happening there all the time. Charlie is one student who is working on using smooth speech to increase his fluency. Charlie is learning to use a number of strategies to make his speech more fluent, and is doing great with stretching out his words, slowing down his speaking rate, and using easy starts to prevent bumps. This week, we used fun conversation topics to practice using all of these strategies. We had a great time talking about silly and fun topics. Charlie picked his two favorites to share on the blog!

A lot of my students come to speech to improve their production of speech sounds. As mentioned before, we typically have them learn to use the sound in isolation, then words, sentences, and eventually conversation. This past week, the students have been using the iPads to give them words with their targeted sounds. They are then required to write as many sentences as they can using their given words. They practice saying their sentences including all of their targeted sounds. This has worked great for increasing their writing skills as well as improving their speech!!
Over the past couple of weeks, Stellie, Logan, and Jared (along with other speech friends!) have been working hard to perfect their speech sounds so that they can be understood all of the time. One of the awesome things about working on articulation (saying sounds correctly) is that students can be successful over and over at different levels of difficulty. When students just begin speech therapy for articulation, they often work on specific sounds in isolation, for example, saying just the "s" sound. After they master making their sound by itself, we celebrate and move on to using the sounds in words. After a lot of practice and hard work at the word level, students begin making sentences, and eventually they practice using good speech in conversation. In Miss Weyandt's room there are students working at every level on lots of different sounds, and with all their hard work, it's no wonder they are succeeding and moving on up all the time!
In order to build oral reading fluency, my 3rd and 4th grade students have been reading a lot of poetry! We especially like poems by Ken Nesbitt! He writes funny poems on topics that the kids love. This past week, the 4th graders wrote a persuasive letter to Mrs. Smith asking to perform their favorite poem, "My Teacher Took My iPod," at morning Roar. Although they were a little shy, check out their amazing fluency in front of the entire school!! A few weeks ago, Mrs. Brower took the initiative to create an extended learning area at Herbert Mills. We now have some tables in the breezeway that we can use to work with kids throughout the day . Not only does this give us some added space, the kids love learning in a new environment! This past week, the 3rd and 4th graders practiced their reading fluency and the first graders wrote advanced code words on the windows! We will plan to spend more time out here over the next couple months.
Ala'Mein has been working very hard to understand and use location words such as above, below, between, beside, etc. Last week, we went on a walk around the school during our speech time. He was instructed to place a post-it near a certain object depending on the direction I gave him. For example, I told him to put the post-it below the W. Check out his work below!
